Our own Juliana Uruburu is off to Vancouver to take part in a very interesting summit hosted by the Italian Ministry of Agriculture next week. The topic of discussion is somewhat delicate...
The Italian government is hosting a group of 10 American food professionals at Casa D'Italia where the Italian Olympians are housed, to come up with a plan to combat the American locavore movement. They're concerned that Americans are moving to the trend of eating locally to the detriment of their traditional Italian food exports. Prosciutto from La Quercia in Iowa, rather than Prosicutto di Parma. Truffle Tremor, rather than Sottocenere al Tartufo. Bozzano Ranch's Toscano, rather than an estate-bottled Tuscan oil.
So while Juliana loves supporting American artisans, and Californians in particular, she is also keenly interested in the continued success of the Italian cheese and agricultural export business.
So what do you think? Can these two idealogies coexist? How can we support both the local producers in California AND the Italian producers whose products have to travel a great distance to reach us?
