As many customers are aware, there are changes underway in the butcher shop. Monday, May 31, was the last day for Enzo’s Meat and Poultry Shop at Market Hall.
We end our working relationship with Mark Murphy, owner of Enzo's, on an amicable basis. Mark has taken a position at a meat department in Danville. We want to thank Mark for his work and dedication to the store over the past twenty years, and our thanks also to Gino.
The new meat shop will be Marin Sun Farms Butcher Shop owned by David Evans, a fourth generation Marin County rancher. The shop is set to open by June 12.
Marin Sun Farms meat products might be familiar to some of you through their participation at the Ferry Plaza Farmers’ Market in San Francisco, their butcher shop in Point Reyes Station and their CSA program. David Evans' program focuses on grass-fed and sustainably raised animals, free of synthetic hormones and antibiotics. David partners with ranchers and farmers within the Bay Area food shed, focusing on impeccable animal husbandry and great flavor.
The manager and head butcher for the new shop will be Chuck Traugott. Chuck has been a butcher and manager at the Fatted Calf in Napa and at Cafe Rouge's butcher shop in Berkeley. Previously, Chuck was Chef de Partie at Oliveto Restaurant. The assistant manager will be Michelle Sanchez who has been a butcher for Star Market in Berkeley and Baron’s Meat and Poultry in Alameda, as well as a corporate and private chef.
We hope that the many customers of Enzo’s will appreciate and enjoy the products provided by David, Chuck and Melissa at the Marin Sun Farms Butcher Shop.

... regardless of the excellent staff and variety of choice that Enzo's offered the true cost of food is much higher unless you support inhumane treatment of animals. The cruelty of mass production farms is difficult to watch. I suggest anyone who wants to continue to eat this type of meat watch what goes on at one of these types of farms and then see if you still want to put it in your mouth. If you can not stomach watching it maybe your shouldn't stomach eating it. It better meat just less of it. |

... I just moved to the neighborhood a few months ago and just started shopping at Enzo's and although they barely knew me they were kind enough to special order things for me without a second glance. Although my experience with the new owners has been limited, all I can say is they just don't have the variety of cuts that I'd like. |

... Oh come on, that is just lame. We were probably the FIRST shoppers ever at Market Hall, whining a little at needing to walk the extra block with a passel of kids in tow from the old Pasta Shop location. But give me a break. I loved Enzos and we have only shopped at the new guys a couple of times, but the meat and poultry is superior, and the owners know what they are doing. It IS hard to give up old favorites and change is never easy, but this is a really good change. Enzo's was old style and had a lot of good cuts (GO TO LUNARDIS, that is where all the other old school Italians in the neighborhood go -- me too when I want kidney chops), but though we've always tried to go grass fed and sustainable as much as possible, more and more I am having a hard time accepting the TASTE of mass produced meat, aside from the practices. So, I warmly welcome the new kids on the block. |

... Enzo's was the best. The fellows were family to me. They had great warmth and great finesse and were the cornerstone of the whole shebang. The new guys? Their display cases filled with hunks of dark red meat are an assault. A sure motivation to go vegan. Bye bye. Enzo's, Gilio, Jose, Mark et al. Thanks for the memories of what good food, good service and great rapport used to mean. |

... I, too, have been shopping at Enzo's for 20 years. I still cannot believe this amazing butcher shop is gone- it was the main reason I shopped at Market Hall. So much for history and loyalty. MSF has nowhere near the selection of my beloved Enzo's, and their prices are stratospheric. I will miss everything about Enzo's. Goodbye, Market Hall. |

... A great operation, Enzo's, with high quality meats is sacrificed for higher rent and politically correct meat that will taste less. Enzo's offered a choice to all customers, local or richer and tastier. The Market Hall owners have taken away that choice. A sad day. They have lost a 20 year customer. Truly annoying. |

... I was shocked-and sad-to find Enzo's closed today. I've been buying most of my meat and poultry there for the last 15 years. Those butchers were always so nice and knowledgeable! I would have liked a chance to say goodbye and tell them thank you in person. My husband was just there the day before they closed, they didn't say a word. So... thanks to all of you and I hope we see some of you rehired by the new vendor. |

... We support a move to sustanably raised animals of impeccable (does that mean humane?) husandry. Keep going! Healthy tortillas in the produce department? Organic cabbage and potatoes once in awhile? Every improvement is appreciated. |
