It is a lot of work keeping our stores in the best possible condition - between stocking the shelves, filling the sandwich case, writing the menu boards, even changing light bulbs - our Managers and Department Heads have a lot to do. But sometimes, we get called away to tend to other tasks...
Sandy Sonnenfelt, our Prepared Foods Coordinator, just returned from a day at Shone Farms at Santa Rosa Junior College's Agricultural Program. She was attending an Advanced Sensory Evaluation Seminar with, among others, Harold McGee, author of the seminal tome, On Food and Cooking. Among their tasks was to blend, taste and price their own extra virgin olive oil from a mix of varietal olive oils.
Juliana Uruburu, our Cheese Program Director, also was away this week. She was asked to judge the CalExpo California Cheese Competition. Now judging cheese may not sound that difficult to a cheese lover, but rest assured, detecting the subtle differences between 12 fresh goat cheeses is no easy feat. But that's why they don't let just anyone do it - Juliana is a pro.
Linda Sikoski, our Product Manager, was called to New York a few weeks ago to judge the first round of the SOFI Awards, (click here to read a post about her epic tasting adventure). Well now she's being called back for Round 2! She'll be off to New York any day now to further pare down the list of semifinalists to the best of the best. And at the end of June, she'll be flying back one more time to help crown the winners. Tough job, but someone has to do it!
