What does Hapuku Mean?
The name Hapuku comes from the name of a river in Kaikoura, New Zealand, a small town about a three-hour drive north of Christchurch—the South Island's largest city. In fact, the Hapuku River is the southern boundary of the Wilson's family farm in New Zealand. Hapuku, in the indigenous Maori language, means "big-bellied fish," or Grouper. And the reason the local Maori tribe named the river Hapuku is because there was a large rock jutting out of the ocean in alignment with the mouth of the river, and they knew that if they fished near that rock, they would catch Grouper. And so, in the Wilsons' effort to tie their Rockridge business back to their native New Zealand, Hapuku Fish Shop was born.

It's our responsibility to help our customers understand what sustainability means, especially when it comes to seafood, which has so many factors affecting its environmental classification as "best choice," "good alternative," etc. Being able to answer your questions with the most up-to-date information is one of the most important aspects of our job. Whether it's about where our fish comes from, why we don't carry certain fish, or which fish is the most environmentally responsible choice, we will do our best to share our knowledge and help you make the right decision. We also try to direct you to the best resources for researching more on your own.

We're not only your neighborhood fish market. We're also your fish & chips shop, your sous-chef and your favorite new lunch spot.
We don't know of many other fresh fish markets that offer seafood cooked to order. At Hapuku, we go beyond the call of fresh fish. Need a base for your cioppino or cocktail sauce to spice up your shrimp? We have the stock and sauce you need, all fresh, housemade, and ready to go. Or stop by for lunch to try one of our epic fried fish sandwiches, served on a ciabatta roll with coleslaw, tartar sauce and french fries on the side. We also make traditional fish & chips, and housemade soups, available hot or frozen.
